Money, Money, Money…forget it!

Posted by: chefkeem In: Playground Squidoo

Just for one week – let’s forget about the chase for online money and write from the heart.

I’ve realized my diminishing ability to play, when making new Squidoo lenses. There’s always the thought about “monetizing” this and that and what else might they buy. It’s aggravating!

O.k. – I need money. I need to create some kind of compensation for spending all that time on the web. I’m sharing myself, I give away info that others can use, I should get paid for it. Absolutely.

What disturbs me is that this kind of mindset begins to creep into everything I do. Maybe I need a break.

Incidentally, Squidoo released the new TWTTRSTRM tool – perfect for a discussion on my topic.

What if we’d forget about making money online for one week, and focused only on writing from the heart?

Chef, it’s refreshing to read someone that isn’t just about filling their pockets with cake.

Your lenses are well done, beautifully presented and much like a perfect steak (with garnish of course!). It is that which shows through in the end and that reason why people would rather buy things from you than anyone else.

All the best,

I know the feeling. I find myself making two kinds of lenses: those that I hope will make more than lensrank money – and those that are just fun or interesting.

But your lenses (from what I’ve seen) are mostly on the fun or community side of that, aren’t they? Is it really so bad to go chasing some keywords that sell?

Thanks for all your comments. Just to be clear – I’m all for making money online, but I try not to be consumed by this purpose. I believe that we can be even more commercially successful by offering authentic content and a generous, trustworthy personality.

It’s an exercise in self-exploration rather than a judgment about “monetizing”.

I can understand your frustration but don’t let it get to you. I think you are one of the “gifted” Squids who is able to market yourself, your own products, your ideas and build buzz around YOU. Some of us don’t have that. Some may be getting there but need to find ways of breaking into more cash to justify the huge amount of time they are investing. (AJ, Spirituality, and many others)

Failure to have the necessary quality you describe will definitely limit “success” but I would be concerned that if people feel it’s wrong to “monetize” they will be strangling themselves from the cash that’s needed to continue their efforts.

I say keep up what you’re doing, challenge us to think, and guide us through your example…that’s as you say, much of what you give. (and I appreciate that!)

Writing from the heart is often the mode that I adopt for writing on Squidoo, lenses on topics that strike my interest.
I end up with a lot of low traffic lenses, but like the ability to create lenses about topics that touch my heart.
